Dermatoscopy is a simple way to prevent skin cancer. It is a method of diagnosing the early stages of melanoma and other skin neoplasms. It is a non-surgical, painless examination that every person must have once a year.

How it works

Using a dermatoscop, the doctor examines the mole under 16x magnification with special illumination. This allows the detection of the initial stages of skin cancer when it has not yet metastasized and is not dangerous. High-resolution photo documentation helps to track the changes of suspicious neoplasms in a dynamic way.

Early diagnosis makes it possible to take measures to prevent skin cancer and save lives.

A — Asymmetry

Normal moles are symmetrical. Draw an imaginary line through their middle, then the halves should be completely symmetrical. In suspicious cases, the moles look different on both sides.

B — Border

Normal moles have a clear border. Suspicious moles have fuzzy, jagged borders.

C — Color

A birthmark that appears in more than one colour or has multiple different hues is suspicious and should be seen by a doctor. Normal birthmarks are usually of one colour, although they may include lighter or darker shades of the same colour.

D — Diameter

If a mole is larger than a rubber band at the end of a pencil (about 6 mm), it should be examined by a physician. This includes spots that do not have any other abnormalities (colour, borders, asymmetry).

E — Evolution

If birthmarks have changed in number, symmetry, borders or colour, they need to be seen by a doctor.

It is worth remembering that a malignant mole does not necessarily differ from a normal mole in each of these criteria. A single difference is enough to consider a mole suspicious, in which case it should be seen by a dermatologist.
